PNG to WebP Converter

Convert PNG and JPG images to WebP and cut file size 25–35% with no visible quality loss. Batch mode, instant, 100% browser-based.

WebP is the web's sweet spot: the same image as a PNG at 25–35% less weight, with transparency support and no licensing drama. Converting your site's images is the cheapest page-speed win available — faster loads, better Core Web Vitals, lower bandwidth.

Drop PNG or JPG files in, get WebP out, in batches if you like. Conversion is local and instant; there is no upload queue because there is no server involved.

How it worksPage 2

Why WebP is usually smaller — illustrated

WebP uses predictive coding: before storing a block, it predicts the block's pixels from the already-encoded neighbors and saves only the difference. Flat areas (sky, walls, gradients) predict almost perfectly, so they cost a few bytes instead of the full block. JPEG skips prediction and instead runs a fixed 8×8 cosine transform, which discards high frequencies whether or not there is anything to save. The result, at equal visual quality, is WebP files roughly 25–35% smaller than JPEG and significantly smaller than PNG for photos.

Top row: JPEG codes each 8×8 block in isolation, dropping high frequencies. Bottom: WebP predicts each block from the neighbor above and left, storing only the leftover (usually near zero), so flat blocks cost almost nothing.

Where the savings land

  1. Quality 90%:≈ 620 KB — visually identical, ~38% smaller
  2. Quality 80%:≈ 470 KB — tiny artifacts only under close zoom
  3. Flat blocks win:Photos with sky/walls compress best; noisy grain compresses worst
  4. Browser support:All modern browsers decode WebP — safe for production today

Frequently asked questions

Is WebP really smaller than PNG?

For photographic and UI imagery, typically 25–35% smaller at visually identical quality, and lossless WebP still beats PNG by roughly 25%. The savings come from a more modern compression algorithm, not from discarding data.

Do all browsers support WebP now?

Yes — Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari have all supported WebP for years, covering effectively 100% of current browsers. The only exceptions are very old enterprise images of IE11, which is why many sites keep PNG fallbacks for legacy tooling only.
